UWECI Statement Following Yesterday's Verdict in Minneapolis

April 21, 2021 | United Way Team

The world changed for many when George Floyd was murdered by former Minneapolis police officer, Derek Chauvin, last May. The tragic event initiated deep reflection, strong demonstration, and broad transformation among corporations and governments on a local, national, and international level.

United Way of East Central Iowa believes diversity, equity, and inclusion needs to be a priority to support our internal and external partners. We are committed to growth in the pursuit of becoming an ally and champion to diverse populations and creating a more welcoming, inclusive, and safe environment. Our connecting power will be used to foster and support inclusive solutions, and continue to combat systemic racism through our ongoing words and actions.

We fight for every person in East Central Iowa, and will work to ensure that each individual has equitable access to healthcare, education, and economic mobility.

UWECI supports the Black and African American communities, especially with regard to this verdict. We understand that this is a monumental outcome, but nonetheless painful. We must keep George Floyd and other individuals who are impacted by racially motivated acts of violence in our thoughts. While they cannot be with us physically, their memory will remind us to strive for a more just, peaceful, and accepting global society.
