Eastern Iowa organizations competed in a curling competition at the Cedar Rapids Ice Arena on Friday.

A lot of people playing had never curled before, but they say it's something worth learning for a great cause.

Area businesses make up the teams playing and there's six to eight players on each team.

One person at a time throws a stone and others sweep the ice.

The goal is to get the stone as close to the bulls-eye as possible.

United Way's goal is to raise money which goes to their general fund.

They expect to raise almost $4,000 from the event registration fees, which were $100 per person.

Participants say learning how to best throw the stone is the hardest part of playing the sport.

Bob Hatala said, "I'm absolutely not good at it at all, I wouldn't even put myself in a rookie classification. So very much a novice and just trying to figure out how to adjust the throws to get them down to the other end right now."

United Way Campaign Manager Destiny Hastings says they would love to hold this event again next year.
