April 25, 2017 | United Way Team

Welcome to United Way of East Central Iowa, Amy!

Amy Geiger recently joined United Way as our new Vice President of Resource Development. Get to know a little about Amy by reading her responses below.

Tell us about where you’re from, where you grew up, etc.
I grew up in Cedar Rapids and attended Grant Wood, McKinley, and Washington schools. I’m the oldest of three and have strong family ties that include highly competitive croquet games! I attended the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley, and stayed in Colorado for 10 years. I think I'm one of the few Iowans who left mountains to move back home but have not regretted it!

What are your hobbies, what do you do for fun?
Almost anything outdoors: walking, bicycling, golf, gardening, hiking, kayaking, and annual wilderness adventure trips. I love time with family and creating memorable moments. I enjoy time in the kitchen and tapping into my creative side with knitting, an occasional craft project, decorating, or creating that perpetual list of DIY projects. Throw in Hawkeye football and basketball, the Cubs, and the Packers, and I’m a happy camper!

What’s your favorite way to give back to your community?
Through my work and our children. I spent my career working in the nonprofit sector, creating programs, and raising funds that address needs for children and families and enhance community services. My husband and I have loved everything our children have been involved in and volunteered when needed. We not only helped impact schools, organizations, and programs, but also hope we provided a positive role model for our children in understanding the importance of supporting your community through volunteerism.

If you were a crayon, what color would you be?
Hands down yellow. It's happy, warm, and adds a bright spot to any picture.

What are you currently watching on Netflix?
I last watched a great movie called Today’s Special with the tagline "Life Has No Recipe."

Bear Lake in Colorado

Where’s your favorite place in the world?

Bear Lake in Rocky Mountain National Park. I love to sit on the giant boulders next to the lake and soak in the view of Hallett’s Peak. You see the most spectacular reflections in the lake. My favorite is in the fall when the Aspen are at their peak. Bear Lake has been the starting point for many beautiful hikes and memorable times spent in the mountains.
