New Year, New CEO

January 04, 2017 | United Way Team

Tim Stiles, former Vice President and COO, now serves as President and CEO of United Way of East Central Iowa. Get to know our new CEO:

How long have you been involved with United Way?

Tim with his wife, Chris 30 years, with the last four years here in Cedar Rapids.

What are your initial three goals as CEO?

  1. Grow community engagement with United Way. This will involve growing our base of support, especially with 20–30 year olds, through volunteer engagement and involvement in community causes.
  2. Implement strategies that will create more measurable improvement in the education, financial stability, and health for everyone in the communities we serve.
  3. Continue improving the skills, knowledge, and strength of United Way's team to meet the challenges we face going forward.

What do you know now that you wish you had known earlier in your career?
Any problem or challenge you are facing has probably been faced by someone else. Take the time to find them and learn from them.

What are your passions outside the office? What do you do for fun?
Family, traveling, and following the Cyclones. I enjoy being active and being around people. This could involve taking in a football game, skiing, biking, or enjoying a good band and food at Cedar Ridge.

How would you hope that your leadership style influences others?
My leadership style is one that allows others to think innovatively and not be afraid to actively pursue those innovations.

What profession other than your own would you like to attempt?
Fiction writing. It’s a great escape and satisfies the need to create.

Do you have a favorite band or singer?
Back in the day, I loved the Eagles. Today, it is O.A.R. I like their latest song, “I Go Through.”
