See how the second Board Orientation & Leadership Development (BOLD) class is settling in.

The 2019-2020 Board Orientation & Leadership Development (BOLD) class had their first session last month. Although natural to be nervous and anxious, the new cohort expressed feelings of eagerness and comfort after their first time spent together.

“I loved how engaging the first session was,” said BOLD member, Allie Jackson of Cedar Rapids Bank and Trust. “Not only am I excited to learn about being on a board, but I am excited to learn about all the great nonprofits in our community.”

The first session covered board basics and working with a nonprofit organization. Future sessions will take a deeper dive into topics such as board governance, strategic planning, advocacy, and public engagement.

BOLD is led by United Way of East Central Iowa’s (UWECI) Young Leaders Society and the series features six 90-minute workshops including presentations from community leaders, group conversations, training and networking, and more. Additionally, BOLD members have the chance to ask questions about the expectations of board leadership, sit in on a board meeting, and learn more about the nonprofit organizations in East Central Iowa.

“I think [BOLD] is going to be a truly positive experience,” said BOLD member, Tyler Balkman from Collins Aerospace. “Having the chance to not only understand a board structure for local nonprofits, but also the background of those involved, is tremendous.”

The series will go through April 2020 and will wrap up with a graduation event.

“I applied for BOLD so I could become a productive board member,” said BOLD member and TrueNorth employee Sophia Arias. “I’m excited to hear the speakers and their stories, and any advice they have on joining a board. I think it will be helpful to know what to expect and what is expected of me.”

BOLD is held in partnership with UWECI, Inclusive ICR, and Greater Cedar Rapids Community Foundation (GCRCF).
